2011 24 Hours in the Enchanted Forest.

On June 18th, 2011 twelve members of the Pale Goat Race Team went to the Zuni forest to race in several categories. The wind was blowing, day was hot and it was dry. Super fine dust found its way into everything including the rider’s lungs, not making this task any easier. Despite the conditions Pale Goat’s riders put up some impressive laps on the 16.4 mile course. Everyone who raced saw great improvement over last year’s lap times; in fact the whole event was much more competitive than last year. There were a few injuries to team mates as well as other riders, we saw a couple of dislocated shoulders, a contusion, and many scraped up legs and arms. Over the entire event was a great time, Zia rides always puts together a great event.

The morning of the race there was excitement and anticipation in the air, racers were putting the finishing touches on their bikes making sure everything was good to go. As start time drew near we could all tell that in addition to dealing with the dust, it was going to be a hot day. We were right, the day laps were some of the hardest laps, although we were fresh, the heat made for some difficult early laps. But the sun goes down and in the forest the heat doesn’t stick around, the chilly night was welcome while we were riding but damn if it didn’t make it hard to get out of the sleeping bag to get ready. When the day broke the next day the excitement from the day before was replaced with pure exhaustion, I doubt most riders had more than 3 hours of sleep. As noon approached you could see everyone, although exhausted, fill with excitement and pure joy as they realized that they wouldn’t have to do anymore laps. This also meant that a big meal, some beer and a full night’s sleep was getting closer. After 24 hours of riding that is the best food, best beer and best sleep you will ever have, add that with the feeling of accomplishment and it makes it all worth it in the end.

Results. Pale Goats in green.

2011 Iron Horse Classic

On Saturday May 28, 2011 three team members competed in the 40th annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic where riders climbed a total of 6300 vertical feet in 47 miles, from Durango, CO to Silverton, CO.  Total participation in the event is on the order of 3000 riders, making the IHBC one of the largest cycling events in the Four Corners.  Pale Goat Racing members Dave Finocchio and James Simmons raced in the Men's Cat IV/V 19-34 category.  Virgil Chavez participated in the McDonald's citizen tour, racing the Durango-Silverton steam engine train to Silverton.  All three team members finished strong, handily beating the train and much of the rest of the field.  Dave Finocchio finished the 47-mile trek 28th out of 114 with a time of 2:47:43.  Virgil Chavez followed close behind finishing around 3:05:00 (official times are not posted for tour riders), followed by James Simmons in 98th of 114 with a time of 3:26:24.  All three riders rode on Stan's tubeless road wheel/tire systems noting a significant improvement in ride quality, climbing, cornering grip and, most importantly, time.

In addition to the road race we had Randy John and James Junes participate in the mountain bike race held on Sunday. They both competed in the Men Cat 2 class and did two laps of a tough course with tough competition. Randy John placed 14th out of 19 with a time of 1:21:02. James Junes placed 18th out of 19 with a time of 1:38:04.

Just finishing this grueling event is an accomplishment in itself.  Finishing as strong as team Pale Goat did this year is truly something to be proud of.  Keep an eye out for Pale Goat Racing on June 18th-19th in the 24-hours of the Enchanted Forest in Gallup NM, where multiple teams made up of Pale Goat riders will be competing against some of the best MTB riders in the area.

Dave.

Santa Fe Century 2011 - Pale Goats hit the road!

Although Pale Goat is predominantly a mountain bike race team, we do have a few members who like to have a little fun on their road bikes as well.  James Simmons, Caleb Dean, Dave Finocchio, Elizabeth Lopez , Cristin Leimer, Kurt Pillote and Virgil Chavez made the trek to the Capitol of New Mexico to participate in the Santa Fe Century.

The morning of the event was cold with 15 to 20 mile hour winds howling from the east.  As we gathered near the starting line around 7:00 AM, we questioned each other's sanity for considering the 105 mile loop in such adverse conditions.  Caleb (on his mountain bike), Cristin and Elizabeth wisely opted for the 50 mile loop.  James, Dave, Virgil and Kurt were determined to tackle the century, regardless of the weather.

As we left Santa Fe, it was apparent that most of the riders had left before the published 7:30 start time.  James, Dave and Virgil started out with a fairly aggressive pace considering that neither of them had ever ridden the course.  They had heard horror stories of "Heartbreak Hill" and of the "last 20 miles" but didn't let that phase them.  The strong crosswinds and long climbs slowed our pace down but we managed to pass literally hundreds of riders throughout the ride.  Heartbreak Hill lived up to it's reputation and was one of the more challenging climbs any of us have climbed on a road bike.  Although the wind put a damper on the first 60 miles of the ride, it was a blessing as we turned the corner and started traveling north.  There is nothing better than a 15 mph tailwind pushing you back in.  The group finished the course in just a little over 5 hours without any mechanical issues.  We saw multiple riders repairing flats along the way but we are proud to report that our Stan's systems worked flawless.

The event was well run with plenty of support and we vowed to return next year.
